S.J. Clarkson to helm Star Trek 4, will be first female direction in franchise history

Living up to those Star Trek ideals

With the announcement that two Star Trek films were in the works franchise fans got pretty excited, and now there's a bit more to get excited about as Paramount has announced that S.J. Clarkson will direct Star Trek 4, which is one of the two films coming, and the direct sequel to Star Trek Beyond. This makes Clarkson the first female director to helm a Trek film.

The fourth film will focus on Kirk running into his father, who was played by Chris Hemsworth in the first film, via some time travel magic. Of course time travel has always been a big part of Star Trek, so it's not that out of the blue, but one can't help but feel that the franchise just wants to capitalize a bit on Hemsworth's star power. Then again, Kirk's daddy issues have played a part throughout the series so... I'm good with this.

Clarkson herself I'm not so sure about. Her closest claim to fame would be directing episodes of The Defenders, which was hit or miss throughout its season. I suppose that does give her experience directing a big ensemble production, but we'll have to wait and see if she can move that to the big screen. Following up Justin Lin in terms of spectacle and panache is no easy task.
