Sad nerds start petition to shut down Rotten Tomatoes over bad Suicide Squad reviews

Your desire for validation is childish

Suicide Squad comes out on Friday, and the early reviews for the film are not so kind. The movie currently has a 33% on Rotten Tomatoes. Some insecure nerds who seek validation in all aspects of their lives are angry about this, which is why they've started a Change.org petition to shut down Rotten Tomatoes.

Ugh, nerds are the f**king worst.

The petition reads as follows (with all grammatical errors intact):

We need this site to be shut down because It's Critics always give The DC Extended Universe movies unjust Bad Reviews, Like

1- Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice 2016

2- Suicide Squad 2016

and that Affects people's opinion even if it's a really great movies

This is about as dumb as that petition to fire Zack Snyder from Justice League, or that petition to replace Colin Trevorrow with George Lucas on Star Wars Episode IX.

On the one hand, I agree that people tend to misinterpret the Rotten Tomatoes percentage scores. They're not a sign of a film's goodness or badness per se but rather an assessment of positive or negative reaction from a select pool of film critics. For instance, a just-okay film may score relatively high on the Rotten Tomatoes scale if it racks up enough mixed-positive reviews. The Fresh/Rotten binary doesn't allow for much nuance.

If anything, Rotten Tomatoes should be treated as an imperfect aggregator, bringing together multiple reviews in one place. In terms of assessing quality, Metacritic may be a bit better since each review is also scored at a 100-point scale in order to create an average rating of the film's goodness/badness.

The current Metacritic score for Suicide Squad is 46/100. Expect a stupid Change.org petition about Metacritic in the next few weeks.

Look, I get it--we want our opinions to be validated every now and then because it feels good sometimes. But it's all a matter of taste at a certain point, and sometimes your personal taste isn't the same as the consensus. That's fine. You have a different opinion. All I'm saying is that there are much more constructive things to do than throwing a tantrum and starting a petition to shut down an entire site just because their number doesn't validate your opinion of a movie you probably haven't seen yet. Instead, you should probably just grow the f**k up.
