Sam Mendes next project is a WWI film called 1917

Moving on from Bond

Sam Mendes is eternally one of my favorite directors after his visually stunning turns on both Skyfall and Spectre, not to mention his revitalization of the Bond franchise. As such I've been excited to see what he's going to bring next, and that turned out to be Pinocchio. However, he dropped off that project and now we possibly know why; he's working on a WWI film called 1917 with Stephen Spielberg producing.

Not much is known about the plot of the film, but Mendes will try his hand at screenwriting for it along with Krysty Wilson-Cairns, who is best known for her work on Penny Dreadful. Judging by the name of the film we're guessing the movie will have to do with America's entry into the first world war, but whether it will be a big picture project or more of a character study isn't known. I'm thinking we'll be seeing more movies like Dunkirk land after its success and this will be very much in the vein.

The film is set for a December 2019 release, but that could easily be pushed as production would have to be incredibly fast.
