Scary Stories delivers a second place win but Hobbs & Shaw holds strong

Box office round up

Hobbs & Shaw may have opened with the lowest box office for Fast & Furious in a long time, but it seems to have a bit more legs than anticipated as the movie came in number one with a strong $25.4 million domestically, dipping only 51 percent. The movie isn't up their with more recent mainline installments in the series but its definitely a money maker with a global total of $332 million.

Coming in second, and decently above expectations, is Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. The horror adaptation delivered decently above expectations with $20.8 million. That's a very strong box office for a PG-13, end-of-summer horror film. With decent reviews and the cache of Guillermo del Toro behind it we could be looking at the sleeper hit of this August. It's even more impressive with the crowded weekend, that saw five wide release films opening at once.

The other films fared decently except for The Kitchen, which translated its complete lack of buzz into a complete lack of box office. Pulling in only $5.5 million the movie should be out of theaters fast than you can not buy a ticket for it. It wasn't all that great anyway, so no big loss on the whole.
