Sinister Six spin-off could still happen, maybe

But, really, probably not

Back when Spider-Man was solely in the hands of Sony, they had a whole Spidey-centric cinematic universe planned; besides the Amazing movies, spin-offs like Venom and Sinister Six were planned. That was a lifetime ago, though, before the deal between Sony and Marvel that will allow Peter Parker to appear in Marvel Cinematic Universe movies starting with May's Captain America: Civil War. That would seem to suggest those planned spin-offs are dead in the water, right?

Well...maybe not.

Drew Goddard, who was on deck to write Sinister Six, spoke to io9 about the project. Goddard says the movie as he envisioned it could easily slot into Marvel's overall plans if they wanted.

"My vision of that movie was a summer annual,” Goddard said. "So you didn’t have to worry about continuity. It was just, 'We take Peter, put him on an adventure, we put him back in his life.' I intentionally wanted a movie that didn’t have to worry about mythology and continuity. It was important to me to make a movie that could stand on its own. ... We just need to let a couple years go by, I think.”

That's far short of a confirmation that the project remains a going concern – he basically said "I'd do it if they still wanted." Knowing it was intended to basically be a standalone Spider-Man story rather than a movie primarily focused on the villains is heartening; Sinister Six always seemed like Sony trying a little to hard to justify an expansion of the universe to compete with the MCU rather than one actually called for by the story.

Of course, at this point that's primarily just navel-gazing. Sony and Marvel will release a jointly-produced Spider-Man flick in 2017, and the character will likely continue to be a presence in other Avengers franchise films. but as far as we know there are no plans to incorporate any further Spidey spin-offs into the MCU.
