Sofia Coppola leaves The Little Mermaid

Abandon ship! or water...

It's been awhile since we last had any concrete news about Working Title and Universal's live-action adaptation of the H.C. Andersen fairy tale, The Little Mermaid. Now it has been confirmed that Sofia Coppola will no longer direct the movie, as a result of creative differences.

According to Variety it has to do with who Coppola wanted to cast as the little mermaid. Although rumours has placed Emma Watson in the leading role more than once, Coppola was supposedly interested in Maya Thurman Hawk, the daughter of Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawk. Neither party has commented on this, but Working Title and Universal will move on with the project without Coppola.

This is really sad, as Coppola was an unconventional - but perfect - choice for such a movie in my eyes. Let's hope they can find a decent replacement, but the realist pessimist in me tells me they won't.
