Sony releases Bloodshot early on digital platforms

Now you can experience the crappy film without leaving your home

Bloodshot may not be a good movie, but there's one thing it has going for it: it'll soon be available on digital platforms. Due to the ongoing coronavirus lockdown on theaters, Sony Pictures is pushing up the digital release of the latest Vin Diesel film so people can actually see it. The movie severely under performed at the box office last weekend, but that's likely because no one can actually get to a theater to see it.

Starting March 24, you'll be able to own the film for the cool price of $19.99. That's actually not too far off from what a ticket price is in NYC, so the deal isn't so bad. It also beats the hell out of Universal's similar digital release structure. Films like Trolls World Tour and The Invisible Man are currently available digitally at the same price, but for a measly 48-hour rental period.

Is this shift in release signaling a change for Sony? According to chairman Tom Rothman, no. "Sony Pictures is firmly committed to theatrical exhibition and we support windowing," he told Deadline. "This is a unique and exceedingly rare circumstance where theaters have been required to close nationwide for the greater good and Bloodshot is abruptly unavailable in any medium. Audiences will now have the chance to own Bloodshot right away and see it at home, where we are all spending more time."

If the quality of the film is any indication, this is probably for the best. Anyone interested will now be shelling out more money to watch the film and this could help Sony recoup budget/marketing costs. It also just plain makes sense instead of outright delaying the film. Nobody knows when this pandemic will subside, so why not let viewers simply buy the movie?
