Spider-Man, Spider-Man. Does whatever box office hits can.

Box office round up

It was a huge weekend for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, as the film debuted to the largest animated opening ever recorded in December with $35.4 million. That's clearly nothing to scoff at, and also means another win for Marvel properties in 2018. Sony must be licking their lips at the prospect of a successful animated superhero universe full of as many spider-people as their imagination can cook up. You don't think a Spider-Pig movie is in the works right now? Then you're wrong.

Surprisingly, Spidey wasn't the only winner this weekend with The Mule debuting $17.2 million from just 2,588 locations. For a movie that was originally supposed to be an Oscar contender, but WB stopped pushing all together that's a solid outcome. It should have a nice run with older audiences who don't want blockbuster fare.

All in all, it was a solid weekend before we get hit with the hurricane of movies that are opening next week all hoping to grab the Christmas crown. Oh, except for Mortal Engines that is, which fell hard to a $7.5 million debut. That's going to go down as one of the biggest flops of the year, and ruins any franchise hopes that Universal and Peter Jackson had with the series.
