Striking new poster for Zhang Yimou's The Flowers of War

0

Last month we brought you the trailer for Zhang Yimou's latest film, The Flowers of War. Now we have a recently released poster for the film, which is a striking visual representation of that title. Movie posters are a lost art these days, so designs like this ought to be admired.

Yimou's big-budget film -- which stars Christian Bale, Tong Dawei, and Shigeo Kobayashi -- is an adaptation of the novel The 13 Women of Nanjing by Geling Yan. The story takes place in 1937 during the Rape of Nanking, an infamous massacre of the Second Sino-Japanese War in which Imperial Japanese forces murdered hundreds of thousands of unarmed Chinese soldiers and civilians, and raped tens of thousands of women and children. Bale plays an American mortician posing as a priest who risks his life to save female students and courtesans by sheltering them at an all-girls school.

The Flowers of War opens in China on December 16th. Wrekin Hill Entertainment has secured a limited release in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco before the new year so the film can qualify for Oscar consideration. A wider release will follow in 2012.
