Taika Waititi will be directing an upcoming Star Wars film

Deep with Disney

Not content to leave his mark in just one of Disney's mega-franchises, it was announced just today that New Zealand native Taika Waititi will be directing and co-writing a feature Star Wars film.

The news comes from the official Star Wars site, which does little in the way of provide details on Waititi's film other than its existence. Co-writing the script with him is Krysty Wilson-Cairns, whose work on Sam Mendes' 1917 last year earned her a BAFTA Award, as well as an Oscar nomination.

Waititi of course no stranger to Star Wars, having provided the voice for The Mandalorian's killer assassin droid IG-11 and directed the series finale. Season two of The Mandalorian is currently in post-production, with a third season already in development for Disney+.

Meanwhile, the Star Wars post goes on to reconfirm the recently-revealed Leslye Headland Star Wars series, as well as two other projects: The Rogue One prequel series focusing on Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), and the long-rumored Obi-Wan Kenobi series, said to focus on everyone's favorite jedi (I mean, come on, he is) "between Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: A New Hope."

That's a lot of Star Wars.

Waititi is wrapping up his football (soccer) drama Next Goal Wins, as well as handling the production of Thor: Love and Thunder, which is currently scheduled for a February 11, 2022 release. One busy guy!
