Tarantino's next film will be distributed by Sony

More fallout from Weinstein

Quentin Tarantino and the Weinstein brothers are almost synonymous. They gave him his first break and he's made ever single movie with them either through Miramax or The Weinstein Company. Well, after Weinstein was finally publicly revealed to be horrible human being in almost every way possible Tarantino decided he probably shouldn't make movies with them anymore, and put the rights up to his next film, working title No. 9, which should take place in LA during the time of the Charles Manson murders (Deadline notes that saying the movie is about Charles Manson is like saying Inglorious Basterds is about Hitler).

And that's when the studios went crazy. Almost every single studio except for Disney put a bid in, but last night Tarantino decided to go with Sony to both finance and distribute the film. It is a huge win for the studio as anything Tarantino directs is automatically guaranteed to make some money and probably garner a few Oscar nominations. Sony is reported to have won because of Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman's impressive knowledge of film history, and a strong marketing campaign that Tarantino gleaned to.

What does this mean for the movie itself? Probably nothing. Sony is smart enough to get out of Tarantino's way so I doubt it will seem any different from previous films. It's just going to have a different logo before it.
