The disastrous Fyre Festival has a Netflix documentary about its failure and deceptive marketing

We can all indulge in a bit of schadenfreude at the expense of trust fund jabronis

The Fyre Festival was billed as a massive luxury music fest, sort of like Coachella for even bigger trust fund jerks. Organized by Billy McFarland and Ja Rule, attendees were promised white sands, crystalline waters, extravagant accommodations, delectable food, a stacked lineup, and a crowd full of only the hottest and hunkiest models and influencers.

Instead, ticket holders got stranded on a crappy beach with cheap mattresses, thin tents, no music, and the ugliest-looking cheese sandwiches this side of a bodega dumpster.

If you watched the horror unfold on social media, it was bonkers. Now Netflix has a documentary about the bizarre story called FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened. You can check out a trailer for it below.

FYRE is directed by Chris Smith, who also did Netflix’s Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond, in which Jim Carrey recounts his experience making Man on the Moon and living the gimmick of Andy Kaufman. Jim & Andy was good, yes, but Smith’s 1999 documentary American Movie is one of my favorite films of all time. I recommend seeking it out and enjoying its portrait of analog indie filmmaking and the nature of the American dream.

FYRE hits Netflix on January 18th, and will also play in select theaters in New York and Los Angeles.
