The Goldfinch gets its first emotional trailer

Roger Deakins makes things pretty

The Goldfinch might me one of my most anticipated dramas of this year. While I haven't read the Pulitzer-prize winning book the film is based on, the fact that it's directed by John Crowley with Cinematography by Roger Deakins pretty much guarantees it's going to be one of the most stunning films to look at this year. Crowly's Brooklyn was so wonderfully shot and full of touches that made it seem so real that he just seems like the perfect director for the emotionally powerful film, and if you've seen anything Deakins has done you know he's the best cinematographer working.

The film, which follows the life of a boy whose mother is killed during a bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is pretty star studded as well, with Ansel Elgort, Nicole Kidman, Sarah Paulson, and Jeffrey Wright leading the way. There's Oscar written all over this sucker, though it's September release date is a little early for a studio gunning for nominations. Whatever awards season brings this trailer alone confirms how visually striking this movie will be, just the shot of the bomb ash juxtaposed with the dust in the air blew my mind.

The Goldfinch will release on September 14, 2019.

Ansel Elgort as a boy whose life was upended when his mother was killed in a bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art when he was 13 years old. The star-studded ensemble is anchored by Nicole Kidman
