Tom Cruise really doesn't want you to use motioning smoothing

No, no! Too smooth! Too smooth!

Tom Cruise is filming Top Gun: Maverick right now with Christopher McQuarrie, but Mission: Impossible - Fallout is also hitting Blu-ray today so they've taken some time to tell us just how terrible motional smoothing is for movies. It's really terrible and McQuarrie and Cruise don't want you to use it to watch their movies. Well, pretty much any director doesn't want you to use it. It really makes movies look like butt. However, McQuarrie and Cruise don't want you to use it so badly that they Tweeted about it.

See motion smoothing is great for sports in HDTV. It magically adds extra frames into your viewing making things look a little less janky when things move fast. Turn it off and watcha football game and the ball seems like it's blurring. Basically, for live events this is great, but for a movie it gives it that weird "soap opera" effect like you're watching something shot on video. Most folks don't even know it's happening, but it definitely gives films a much different feeling.

You should turn it off. At least when you're watching movies. Listen to the Cruise. He knows what he's talking about.
