Tomb Raider gets a reboot

The Tomb Raider video game and film franchises have been effectively dead for years. Recently, however, both have seen a resurgence. With a reboot of the video game series coming late this year or early next year, someone decided the time was right to resurrect the film series as well. GK Films, producers of Rango, The Tourist, The Town, and Scorcese’s upcoming The Invention of Hugo Cabret, has acquired the film rights to the franchise with the intent to reboot it with a “young and dynamic Lara Croft” for a 2013 release. The new film follows the poorly received Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life starring Angelina Jolie. Though GK Films states no intention of who they’d like to play Lara Croft, that mention of the character as “young and dynamic” leads me to believe we won’t be seeing an older Angie Jolie don the tight outfit again. Damn!

No real feelings on this one way or another. At worst, it’ll be a mediocre, cheesecake-filled action flick just like the two Angelina Jolie movies. I just hope they’re not going to go for the “Lara as young, vulnerable, and beaten up” vibe I’m getting from the new Tomb Raider game.
