Trailer for Tilman Singer's Luz channels vintage Cronenberg, Argento, and Zulawski

Tilman Singer’s debut film Luz has gotten a lot of hype in the last year or so among some horror circles. This student thesis film has been hailed as one of the great horror debuts of the last few years. This trailer is a showcase of why. The vibe seems distinctly lo-fi and old school, from the film grain, fashion, and color schemes to the imagery that channels the films of David Cronenberg, Dario Argento, Lucio Fulci, and Andrzej Żuławski.

My worry is that Luz might rely too heavily on retro horror pastiche without having its own personality, but the reviews from the festival circuit have all been promising. My qualms may be the overly cautious part of my brain trying to downplay the hype.

If anything, this Luz poster is the effing business:

Here’s a synopsis of Luz:

Luz, a young cabdriver, drags herself into the brightly lit entrance of a run-down police station. A demonic entity follows her, determined to finally be close to the woman it loves.

Aww, this is a love story.

Luz opens in New York and LA on July 19th, and will spread to other cities in the weeks to follow. We’ll have a review of the film here at Flixist later this month, so keep an eye open for it.
