Uncharted movie rumors are utterly ridiculous

0

Alright, file this one strictly under "rumor," because if this happens a lot of people are going to be sad, but it's worth reporting just for the "WTF?" factor. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune was a strong entry for early PS3 games and did well enough to spawn a highly-acclaimed sequel that was on a lot of "game of the year" lists. Naturally, that means rumors are circling about a possible movie adaptation. David O. Russell, who is just releasing The Fighter, is supposed to be working on the project with plans to direct it for Columbia Pictures. Nothing to strange so far. But here's where it gets weird.

Showbiz 411 reports that Goodfellas stars Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci might be co-starring in the film. Keep in mind that the game is an Indiana Jones-esque action adventure that stars a rough equivalent of Malcom Reynolds from Firefly. As much as I respect the two actors, they are not well suited for this project. Mark Whalberg is also supposed to be involved, which makes more sense, but it doesn't seem that he would be taking the starring role of Nathan Drake.

Even more bizarre is that the film's story will have "something to do with antiquities dealers in New York." Weird, I don't remember that part coming in to play during Drake's romp through the Amazon. Then again, I suppose it's to be expected because the script is being made from scratch, because "word is the actual video game didn't have much there aside from a concept and a name." I forgot that modern games have all the plot complexity of Super Mario Bros. And hey, making a script from scratch for that film adaptation turned out so great!

Here's hoping these are just the crazy rumors that pop up all the time in Hollywood and not a sign for some bizarre Uwe Boll-esque redirection of a game's concept.
