Right after the debut of his latest film Red State at Sundance, Kevin Smith bought his own film for $20, with plans to distribute it himself. Whaaaat?
As per /Film’s scoop, Smith has thrown out the more traditional method of distribution (selling the film to a studio, who then releases the flick to theatres), and will be distributing the film himself.  And it’ll all kick off with a cross-country tour starting on March 5. Smith will be bringing Red State to various large cities for a sneak peek, as well as a Q&A with the man himself. After the break, you can read my reaction to Kevin’s decision. Loads of angry nerds across the internet are giving Kevin a lot of crap for this move, but in reality, it’s probably the best thing to happen to him and his movies. Hollywood has never been a place for indies, so why let the studios buy your film and let it sit on a shelf for months (years sometimes), to only get it on three screens in New York? The way Smith is conducting his business means the theatres get a better slice of the money, and you cut out those god-awful big studios. If this works out, independent cinema will have another renaissance the likes of which haven’t been seen since the early Miramax days.
