VHYES trailer is a retro absurdist delight

A grainy splice of heaven

The VHS format means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. For me it meant the static beauty of green-and-purple tracking errors and the crushing reality that we were too poor to afford DVD--or to afford cable most months, so I've seen the VHS for Tommy Boy an unhealthy amount of times. Some folks have never experienced VHS while others see it as a way of life. One thing we all agree on, though, is that VHS big box art is the best box art there will ever be.

As a love letter to the format, writer/director Jack Henry Robbins has crafted VHYES, which looks to be something of an Adult Swim-style mind-altering smorgasbord of absurdist sketches marrying public access quirks with home movie heart.

Shot entirely on VHS, the film follows Ralph playing with a camcorder, recording over his parents' wedding tape with home videos and his favorite late-night programming. It looks cool and fun and trippy enough to get a big thumbs up from me.

VHYES--featuring Thomas Lennon, Kerri Kenny, and Tim Robbins--will rewind theaters on January 17, 2019.
