Werner Herzog will sell you an imposter in trailer for Family Romance, LLC

I tried to find a happy picture of Herzog

Distributor Film Constellation has unveiled the first teaser trailer for Werner Herzog's Cannes-bound narrative film Family Romance, LLC.

With details kept to a minimum, Variety reports the film to follow "a man who is hired to impersonate the missing father of a 12-year-old girl," and that it was shot "last spring and summer in Tokyo and Aomori, Japan, with non-professional actors (Yuichi Ishii, Mahiro Tanimoto)."

With so little to go on one couldn't be faulted for only a passing interest; while ever-prolific as a documentarian, Herzog's recent narrative endeavors (2016's Salt and Fire; the must-delayed Queen of the Desert from 2015) have been met with less than glowing reviews. Still, I maintain Herzog to be a real living legend of cinema, immortalized for the likes of Aguirre, the Wrath of God and his iconic and unique personality.

I'm always interested in a filmmaker working outside of his or her country or language. You figure good storytelling stems from something you know, so to see someone take on a foreign culture is an ambitious thing.

Family Romance, LLC is set for a May 18th world premiere at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, in what looks to be a busy year for Herzog. With his latest documentary Meeting Gorbachev hitting select theaters now, and another doc brewing for release (Nomad: In the Footsteps of Bruce Chatwin), the German genius isn't slowing down a bit.

He's even in The Mandalorian, guys.
