First official teaser for Star Wars: The Force Awakens
by Nick Valdez

It's been a long time coming. When Disney bought out Lucasfilm two years ago and announced their plans for another Star Wars trilogy, we all went into some sort of nerd shock. Whether or not you're a fan of the films, you understand the kind of weight the Star Wars name has. And whether you like it or not, this (official, not one of the many fan videos surging around social media as of this writing) first trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens sets the tone for the next decade.

With J.J. Abrams directing, a huge and notable cast joining the effort (including John Boyega and Oscar Isaac), and the original tripod of Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford returning, the seventh entry is surely going to reign supreme for years to come.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens releases December 18th, 2015. What do you think?

Star Wars: Episode VII gets official title photo
Star Wars: Episode VII gets official title
by Megan Porch

This morning, the official twitter for Star Wars revealed that Episode VII's principal photography finished shooting... and they also threw in a graphic that contains the film's subtitle.

The Force Awakens leaves me with a lot of questions. Was the Force taking a nap? Did it just not want to be bothered after all the drama surrounding the Skywalker family? Are midichlorians still a thing?

I guess we'll just have to see the movie to find out.

Star Wars: Episode VII has an X-Wing in it

There's not much to say about this. As part of the promotion for the UNICEF "Force for Change" campaign, J.J Abrams recorded a video in front of an X-Wing (technically a Headhunter, but every other site says "X-Wing" and I want to be popular). Sooooo enjoy. You can donate with Omaze to enter the contest for an advanced screening, too.  [via Omaze]

Rian Johnson writing and directing Star Wars: Ep. VIII photo
Rian Johnson writing and directing Star Wars: Ep. VIII
by Matthew Razak

Some big news coming out of the Star Wars camp today as it has been announced that Looper director Rian Johnson will be writing and directing Star Wars: Episode VIII and writing Episode IX. Most likely Abrams will return to direct Episode IX and this will give him the gap and time to do it.

Unless you wanted Abrams to direct all the films this is nothing but good news. Johnson is an incredible director and an even better story teller. Having him pen the screenplays is possibly the best news this franchise has had since the 80s. I can't see a situation where he doesn't knock it out of the park. Directing is a good call too. Though this will be his first truly effects heavy film his work on Looper showed us he can handle sci-fi with the best of them.

Six filmmakers who should direct Star Wars spin-offs photo
Six filmmakers who should direct Star Wars spin-offs
by Alec Kubas-Meyer

When Disney killed the Star Wars Expanded Universe last month, they negated decades of side stories that fleshed out the galaxy far, far away. But they left open the door for a new Expanded Universe, one filled with canon spin-offs that may have to cede some creative control for the sake of narrative consistency, but could allow for some amazing stories to be told that make the “real” Star Wars universe a much more consistently quality world for those who wants to dive into everything (assuming, of course, you ignore the prequels).

Gareth Edwards, director of the just-released Godzilla remake, is the first director to try his hand at this whole spin-off thing, with a film set for December 16, 2016. And while Edwards will probably do a fine job (especially if they give him something involving giant monsters), there are some other directors we’d love to see tackle the Star Wars universe and really expand it in an interesting way.

And once you’ve read through our list, let us know who else you’d like to direct and what you think they should do with the franchise.

Star Wars: Episode VII cast revealed photo
Star Wars: Episode VII cast revealed
by Nick Valdez

Pre-empting possible leaks, with shooting taking place in just a few weeks (and possibly in celebration of May the 4th), the Star Wars: Episode VII crew has announced the cast of the film. And given this huge cast of notable names, I can't wait to see what J.J. Abrams can cook up. That's honestly not something I thought I would catch myself saying either.

Here's the cast. It's lacking some women, but it's refreshingly diverse with John Boyega (Attack the Block) being a huge stand out. Also, the rumored returns of Ford, Hamill, and Fisher have been confirmed:

  • John Boyega
  • Daisy Ridley
  • Adam Driver
  • Oscar Isaac
  • Andy Serkis
  • Domhnall Gleeson
  • Max von Sydow
  • Harrison Ford
  • Carrie Fisher
  • Mark Hamill
  • Anthony Daniels
  • Peter Mayhew
  • Kenny Baker

There are no roles confirmed as of yet, but expect that to slowly reveal itself over the year. This'll be enough to last us awhile anyway. Star Wars: Episode VII releases in theaters December 18, 2015.
