UPDATE: Shane Black to direct Predator reboot

UPDATE: Speaking with Collider, Shane Black considers his upcoming Predator as more of a sequel than a reboot:

As far as Fred and I are concerned anyway,” Black said, adding “Why start over, when you’ve all this rich mythology yet to mine?”  Black said he doesn’t like reboots generally, but can “really get behind inventive sequels”, noting that he likes “the idea of expanding and exploring the existing Predator mythology, rather than hitting the restart button.

So, he’s pretty much going to start a new franchise while keeping the mythos of the old one. I can dig it, but I would’ve preferred a brand new take to be honest. It’s still too early to tell either way anyway. Original story below.

Usually I’m not someone who’s excited at the prospect of yet another famous film franchise getting a reboot, but it’s hard not to feel even a little jazzed when someone involved with the original film is going to helm the new one. When the original Predator was being written, Fox had wanted Shane Black to work on the script but Black repeatedly declined. Then he got a role in the film as Hawkins, the “echo” guy.

Now Fox has finally closed a deal with Black (who most recently directed Iron Man 3) that has him overseeing a script and directing a Predator reboot. I can’t wait for another fun Predator romp. Robert Rodriguez’s sequel, Predators, came close, but I’m hoping Black can bring back the tone of the original.
