Dear mother of God, Broly’s in the new Dragon Ball Super movie

Broly has always been… interesting in the Dragon Ball fandom, at least in my opinion. While I loved watching him stomp through our heroes when he first debuted in Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan, he’s always been a non-canon character that frankly, was kind of poorly written. And dumb. Very dumb. When he was a baby, he was traumatized by Goku crying all the time, so that’s why he hates Goku. As a character, he’s good for only one thing; beating the shit out of our heroes in spectacular fashion.

Fast forward to 2018. Dragon Ball Super just concluded and during the show’s final arc, we got the first canon Legendary Super Saiyan in Kale. We got fantastic action sequences involving her, the LSS became canon, and the show ended on a great note. Of course we were always going to get another Dragon Ball Super movie, but I don’t think anyone expecting Broly to be involved.

And you know what? Holy shit, if the trailer is any indication, then Dragon Ball Super: Broly is going to be an absolute blast. In the Comic-Con trailer, we see him stomping the life out of Goku, Vegeta, and even Freeza in epic fashion! He lays down a beating we’ve only dreamed of and he looks more intimidating than ever before. And don’t you worry, Akira Toriyama is involved in the movie. In fact, he’s more involved here than he has been in any prior Dragon Ball Super movie!

I’ve always been critical of Broly, since he’s nothing more than a hunk of meat that brings out the worst qualities of Dragon Ball, but something about this trailer has me optimistic. It’s full of action, sure, but it also looks like there’s more of a plot here than any other Broly movie before. Plus, this makes Broly canon! I never thought I’d see the day that happens! Between this and his appearance in Fighterz, it’s a good day to be a Broly fan.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly is getting a limited theatrical release by Funimation in January 2019.
