A ‘Groundhog Day’ musical is happening

Yes, that’s right. Tim Minchin and Matthew Warchus, the producers behind Matilda the Musical, are teaming up once again to bring the classic 1993 comedy Groundhog Day to the stage.

The original Groundhog Day tells the story of curmudgeonly weatherman Phil Connors (Bill Murray) trapped reliving Groundhog Day over and over again for a small eternity. Lessons are learned, laughs are shared, Connors tries to throw himself off a building to escape the never ending monotony of February 2nd. It’s a pretty good time.

But Tim Minchin and Matthew Warchus say they don’t want their Groundhog Day to be just like the movie. In a recent interview, Warchus told The Daily Mail, “It has to be something in its own right, not just a carbon copy.” Honestly, as long as they include a song about Ned Ryerson entitled, “Why don’t you remember me? I’ve always loved you, Phil.” I’ll be happy.

Groundhog Day the musical will begin its first workshop this spring. Whether or not the workshop’s date will be determined by a groundhog’s shadow remains to be seen.
