A new Marvel film is in the works at Sony with Amazing Spider-Man 2 writer

After the very-public break-up between Sony and Disney over the fate of everyone’s favorite web-slinger, the division of Spider-Man’s personage between the titans remains a slightly nebulous affair. Spider-Man will return, as they say, in an upcoming MCU film, while Sony continues to develop films like Venom 2 and Morbius within their own… Spidey-verse. Looking to further flesh out those films for Sony is Roberto Orci.

A veteran screenwriter, Orci’s credits include Mission: Impossible III and the recent Star Trek film trilogy, as well as 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which then featured Andrew Garfield in the titular role.

Details are scarce, but with news breaking at TheWrap that the film will focus on a “property… from a different corner of the Marvel universe that Sony has access to,” rather than a more direct link to something like Andy Serkis’ upcoming Venom 2. A far-flung dive into Sony’s Marvel catalogue, the way in which Morbius seems to have come out of nowhere, might be the best angle for Sony to strike from, with Disney quite clearly dominating the Marvel cinematic frontier.

Still, given the first Venom‘s box office success and the all-around adoration for the animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Sony’s got their own operation running along smoothly enough. Fingers cross the Orci project turns out well.
