By Most years the awards season is pretty predictable. There’s the one or two nominations that surprise folks but they never actually win. The frontrunners are the frontrunners because they win. Well, last night the Golden Globes actually attempted to surprise us and not with crass humor or shocking speeches. No, the awards were actually surprises.
The night started off with OK comedy from hosts Any Sandberg and Sandra Oh but concluded with a stunner when Bohemian Rhapsody won best picture. No one saw that coming, and it was proceeded by a surprise win (and wonderful speech) by Glenn Close for The Wife and a slightly less surprising win for Rami Maleck as Freddy Mercury in the aforementioned best picture winner. Probably most surprising is that A Star is Born, which has been hyped for a long while now, only pulled in one win for best song. The Hollywood Foreign Press also loved Green Book, which was predictable, as it gathered the most wins for best actor, best comedy/musical, and best screenplay.
On the television side things were a bit more predictable but wins for The Kaminsky Method for both best actor in a comedy and best comedy came out of seemingly nowhere. Must have made Netflix happy, however, especially in tandem with Roma winning both best director and best foreign language film. The Americans took home the best TV series award as is customary for a great show in its final season.
Honestly, Close was the closest thing to a truly great acceptance speech the entire night as she seemed genuinely shocked and her discussion on women stepping forward was incredible. I found it ironic that the Bohemian Rhapsody team talked so much about truth and inclusivity when their film seemingly white-washed a lot of that out of Queen’s history, not to mention the production struggles it had because of that. It was definitely not the best movie of the year and neither was Green Book. Way to get it wrong. All in all, though, I’m happy that some surprises actually occurred and they weren’t because someone was handed the wrong card.
