Yesterday brought indie film fans a new teaser for A24’s newest horror venture: Men. Written and directed by Alex Garland, the visionary who brought us Ex Machina (2014) and Annihilation (2018), Men is the latest addition to Garland’s haunting filmography.
Men centers around a young woman (Jessie Buckley) as she ventures on a solo-trip following the passing of her ex-husband. Jessie Buckley is now an Academy Award nominee for her role in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s 2021 film The Lost Daughter. The film also stars Rory Kinnear.
The trailer for Men is filled with beautiful portraits of nature set against an eerie cave and unsettling score. Buckley’s character wanders around lush landscapes and abandoned cemeteries, and at times she is stalked by a mysterious man. Is it her late husband? Or someone out to harm her in the English countryside? The trailer is sparse in details about the movie’s plot but draws us in on the promise of Garland’s style and A24’s success in bringing new and exciting horror films to audiences.
Even though the teaser gives us little to go on, I am very excited to see what Garland does with a horror film rather than a sci-fi one. Men premieres in theaters on May 20th.
