Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6 teaser is exciting, confusing

It isn’t as well-known as it should be (though we certainly know), but Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is a wild ride of a show. Like anything, it has its bumps on the road, but at its peak, this MCU television show knows how to shock and awe with tension and crazy plot developments. With that in mind, what the hell was this first look video for season 6?

I absolutely do not mean this in a bad way—there were plenty of images to get excited over. Deke is here (shooting guns like a John Woo character)! Enoch is back! Mack is now director! The journey for frozen Fitz commences! Daisy has awesome new hair! But also, how is Deke still here? How is Enoch back? Why is Simmons trapped in that one shot? Why is everyone mad all the time, and can’t they just get along?

It’s hard to talk about the contents of the teaser (or even the damn title of the video) without spoiling the end of season 5, but here goes: Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) should be dead. His appearance as a hologram wasn’t too much of a surprise, passing on knowledge to Mack—not to mention that Gregg is directing the season premiere.

But along a bunch of new super baddies is what appears to be… an evil Coulson? Gregg has not been listed as an official cast member, so either this is meant to be a surprise (which they are spoiling six months before its July premiere) or a red herring—maybe evil Coulson only shows up for one episode, or it could be a shape-shifting Skrull, which we’ll see in Captain Marvel, a movie that features a younger 1990s Coulson.

Season 6 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (which will also get a season 7) will return sometime this summer (July, according to reports) for a shortened 13-episode season. That’s after Avengers: Endgame, so probably expect the events of that to be waved off in one line of dialogue.
