Since 2020 is the gift that keeps on giving, it comes with a heavy heart to tell you that legendary TV shot Alex Trebek has passed away at 80 from complications due to his recent stint with cancer. Known primarily for his 37 years as the host of Jeopardy, Trebek had taken on something of an immortal status as one of the greatest broadcasters in television history.

Tony Vinciquerra, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment (which produced Jeopardy), said in a statement, “Today we lost a legend and a beloved member of the Sony Pictures family. For 37 amazing years, Alex was that comforting voice, that moment of escape and entertainment at the end of a long, hard day for millions of people around the world. He was the heart and soul of Jeopardy! and he will be deeply missed by everyone who made him part of their lives. Our hearts go out to Jean, Matthew, Emily, and Nicky.”

In May of 2019, Alex Trebek revealed to the world that he had been diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer. While he never stopped fighting and even entered remission, it seems his cancer had come back sometime in the last few months. Just a few weeks ago on USA Today, Trebek said, “I have lived a good life, a full life and I’m nearing the end of that life.”

Sony currently has no plans to replace Trebek on Jeopardy but has noted that episodes will continue to air until December 25, 2020. Alex Trebek’s last day in the studio was on October 29, so there are still episodes left to get through in syndication.

Goodbye, Alex. May you continue to host many events in heaven.
