Andy Serkis will be Caesar again, Fox wants an Oscar

Andy Serkis is the highlight of this year’s most disappointing Ape-based blockbuster, so it’s no real surprise that he will return for the upcoming sequel (which may or may not be a shot-for-shot remake of Full Metal Jacket). What is also not a surprise is the fact that Fox will be campaigning for Serkis to win an Oscar for his captured performance in Rise of the Planet of the Apes. As great as Serkis’s performance is, I don’t think it’s the best of the year (Ryan Gosling and Michael Fassbender both gave better ones), but even conceptually I feel like there are problems with the idea. As nice as it would be, there’s no reason to believe that the exact performance made it to the screen. Everything in that movie was digitally tweaked into oblivion, and there are obviously moments where Andy Serkis was not actually Caesar (for example, when he’s climbing trees), and I doubt that Serkis’s face made a perfect transition to digital every time… So I don’t know how I feel about the idea. I ‘m curious to see what the Academy thinks.
