Another Bruce Almighty sequel in works for Jim Carrey

It’s been five years since Evan Almighty and nine years since Bruce Almighty, and Universal thinks it’s about time for a sequel. Cue the crickets noises. (More numbers: it’s also been eight years since Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Jim Carrey’s last good movie, and, incidentally, one of the best movies of the 00s.)

The new Bruce film would be a starring vehicle for Carrey, who’s currently attached to the magician comedy Burt Wonderstone with Steve Carell. Bruce Almighty III: Part 2 (aka Almighter: The Quickening) will be written by Yes Man screenwriters Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel.

One would assume they’d get Tom Shadyac back to direct the third film in the series, but as /Film notes, Shadyac suffered a severe concussion in 2007. Afterwards, he walked away from Hollywood, opened a homeless shelter, gave away his fortune, moved into a trailer park, and made a documentary about his spiritual journey called I Am.

No word on the story of Bruce Almighty: Resurrection since the project has just been announced. To be honest, I’d rather see Carrey in a fictionalized drama/comedy version of Shadyac’s life since 2007. That’s a more interesting story and a more challenging role than what would wind up in a Bruce sequel.
