Avengers: Endgame beats Avatar at the box office to become the number one movie of all time

It’s finally happened. Avengers: Endgame has overtaken Avatar as the number one movie of all time. Endgame’s current box office tally sits at $2,789.2 billion, and it’s expected to surpass Avatar’s $2,789.7 billion take by the time this weekend’s box office receipts come in.

So much for that expert box office analysis a few weeks ago. Then again, this sudden leap ahead of Avatar was unexpected.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Endgame was still $7 million behind Avatar based on last week’s numbers. Disney then found that the recent Avengers film earned even more money at the global box office than originally estimated, which apparently happens when a movie is ending its theatrical run. Add in another $2 million in domestic ticket sales, and we have Endgame at the cusp of overtaking Avatar.

That’s a lot of change in the couch cushions.

Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame | “To the End”

MCU chief Kevin Feige announced Endgame as the all-time box office champ last night at the San Diego Comic Con, offering a thank you to the people who worked on the various films of the shared universe as well as the fans who put the movies on top. He also announced several films and Disney+ shows slated for Marvel Phase Four:

Feige also took a moment to tease Black Panther 2, Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Captain Marvel 2, an MCU Fantastic Four film, and mutants (ostensibly the X-Men).

Excelsior.
