Barbie remains strong at the box office, propelling another record setting weekend

0

It was another prosperous weekend for movies at the box office. While nothing has been able to dethrone Barbie from the number-one spot, a couple of new films managed to push Oppenheimer out of its second-place spot after a record-setting two weeks. Barbenheimer fever is still strong, but clearly, Barbie is the main draw there.

After finally crossing the $1 billion global box office barrier, Barbie took in another $53 million domestically this past weekend. That makes it the second film of 2023 to earn as much, with The Super Mario Bros. Movie being the first. Strangely, I have a feeling Barbie will wind up besting Mario when it comes to overall gross.

While Oppenheimer has finally dropped to third place, it also hit another milestone in overall gross. With an additional $28.7 million in domestic gross, the film has now crossed $500 million worldwide. It’s not the biggest earner for director Christopher Nolan (his Batman films were huge), but the movie has become the highest gross for a World War 2 film ever.

In second place came newcomer Meg 2: The Trench with a $30 million domestic opening and a ludicrous $112 million overseas. Fourth was the animated feature Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, bringing in $28 million for the weekend and $43.1 million for its five-day total (the film opened on Wednesday). This is one of the first weekends in a long time where four of the top 10 movies grossed over $25 million.

Here are the top 10 films for the weekend of August 4-6, 2023. All totals listed are domestic:

  1. Barbie – $53 million
  2. Meg 2: The Trench – $30 million
  3. Oppenheimer – $28.7 million
  4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem – $28 million
  5. Haunted Mansion – $8.9 million
  6. Sound of Freedom – $7 million
  7. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One – $6.4 million
  8. Talk To Me – $6.2 million
  9. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny – $1.5 million
  10. Elemental – $1.2 million
