Before Love and Thunder, Taika Waititi will direct Next Goal Wins

The New Zealand filmmaker has really had a terrific couple of years lately, hasn’t he? Delivering a huge win with Thor: Ragnarok and injecting the MCU with his off-kilter humor, Taika Waititi is slated to return to the character (sort of!) with Thor: Love and Thunder. Before that, his Nazi-satire Jojo Rabbit will be hitting theaters in just a few months, and word’s broken that we’ll get another film from the Flight of the Concords-alum before his big Marvel return.

Next Goal Wins is to be directed by Waititi, based on the 2014 documentary of the same name. The documentary tells the true story of the American Samoa football team, which suffered a crushing and all-time worst defeat to Australia in 2001, with a score of 31-0. In a bid to qualify for the 2014 World Cup, the team hires coach Thomas Rongen to whip the team into shape.

It certainly sounds like an interesting story, and one ripe for Waititi’s simultaneously-sweet and harsh humor. I’m getting Cool Runnings vibes!

No doubt a tighter production than something as logistically-large as Thor, Next Goal Wins is set to shoot this coming Fall, with Fox Searchlight overseeing production.
