Brad Bird likely to defect from Mission: Impossible 5

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol might be a nightmare to punctuate, but was a fantastic live-action debut for Brad Bird, immediately establishing him as one of the most talented action directors working today. Unfortunately, Bird has told Crave Online that he’s unlikely to return to Tom Cruise’s behemoth franchise, saying it has benefited from having a different director for each outing:

No, I think that one of the things that’s fun about the series is that they always pull in a different director and try to get a different kind of take on the premise. I’d probably be open to looking at it, but I think that part of one of the successes of the franchises is that they’re always reassessing it with a new director.

Personally, I’d like to see the Mission: Impossible movies gain a little consistency, particularly with Bird having hit on a winning formula last time. It’s difficult to invest in the characters when the world surrounding them feels completely separate from every previous film they’ve been in. Since he’s not totally opposed to the idea, perhaps Bird will reconsider. Bringing Ving Rhames back as a regular wouldn’t go amiss, either.
