Cabin In The Woods crew hit with copyright lawsuit

Author Paul Gallagher is filing a lawsuit against those involved with The Cabin In The Woods: Lionsgate, Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard, claiming the movie infringes upon the copyright of his novel The Little White Trip: A Night in the Pines. And it’s not an outrageous claim, similarities include, well everything from the presence of a cabin in the woods to the main characters having almost identical names, to the twist that pretty much defines the movie.

My feelings on this can be easily summed up with a long sigh and a glum expression. I can’t hate this Gallagher guy for wanting to get his, and as to whether Whedon and Goddard ripped off the book: who knows and who cares? The reality is that the current system of copyright is exploitative and cruel, and studios abuse it far more every single day than a single author’s lawsuit ever could. Whedon, Goddard and Lionsgate don’t need anyone to defend them.
