Captain Planet to save the world again in live action

Imagine a world where people wore fanny packs, snapback hats, mullets, bright neon shorts, and tie-dyed shirts unironically. Imagine a world where people weren’t environmentalists just to be cool. Imagine a world before global warming was invented. Sounds like an episode of the Twilight Zone, right? What I’ve led you to believe was a fantasy world is actually Earth circa the early 1990’s.

Captain Planet and the Planeteers was a product of its time, mixing all of the aforementioned elements with nature’s own elements (and… Heart) into two cartoon series. In an attempt to bring Captain Planet and his ragtag group of UN sidekicks back for modern audiences, Cartoon Network has announced plans to adapt the cartoon series into a live-action film with Don Murphy, producer of the Transformers trilogy.

The announcement is vague on details, such as whether or not the adaptation would be released theatrically, made-for-TV, or direct-to-video. However, all jokes aside, Captain Planet and the Planeteers was revolutionary for its time, bringing environmental awareness to minds at a time when saving the planet wasn’t as important as it is now. Imagine a world where Captain Planet is a CGI god voiced by the godfather of environmentalism, Al Gore. Now that’s a world I wouldn’t mind living in.
