When he’s not playing notorious serial killer Dennis Nilsen in ITV’s new drama Des, the talented David Tennant will be venturing into more familiar, fantasy territory as adventurer Phileas Fogg in Around the World in 80 Days.
Jules Verne’s novel has taken a bit of a beating from the world of TV and film over the years, the last decent adaptation arguably dating back to Michael Anderson’s 1956 release. Skipping past a 1980s miniseries, you may remember the somewhat misguided attempt to adapt the material back in 2004 — a caper led by Jackie Chan and Arnold Schwarzenegger (alas, not the last time they’ll be collaborating.)
Fortunately, you can put all your Verne-related fears to rest as the latest adaptation comes from the BBC’s trusty hands. Around the World will feature Ibrahim Koma and The Crown’s Leonie Benesch in the leading roles of Passepartout and Abigail Fix, playing opposite the Dr Who star. The three feature on the film’s latest promotional poster, with an official statement from the production team simply saying “The clock is ticking.”
Tennant certainly hasn’t been sat idle this year, recently making an appearance on BBC’s semi-improvised drama Staged. Opposite Good Omens co-star Michael Sheen, Tennant captured the general discombobulation at the height of lockdown, making the experience feel universally frustrating, surreal and occasionally surprising. Proof, if it’s needed, that he throws himself into every role.
