Civil War brews up a modest first place finish this weekend

0

For all of the controversy that Alex Garland’s Civil War brewed before opening, its first weekend was only a modest success. Despite strong critical reception and even solid audience buzz, Civil War opened to just $25.7 million domestically. The film has not yet opened overseas, so distributor A24 is maybe a little worried. The film cost a reported $50 million, but on the bright side, this is the first A24 release to top the box office in North America. It’s also the biggest R-rated debut for 2024.

In second place came Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire with another $15.5 million. Warner Bros. has been incredibly happy with this movie, so we’re likely to get a sixth film in the future. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is still trucking along in third, bringing in $5.7 million in its fourth weekend. That isn’t enough to recoup its $100 million budget, with the film having generated only $159.9 million globally.

In fourth came Kung Fu Panda 4, basically repeating last week and adding another $5.5 million to its overall gross. The same goes for Dune: Part Two, which landed at fifth and made $4.3 million. The box office is pretty boring right now as new releases aren’t happening just yet. Heck, Shrek 2 charted in the top 10!

Here are the top 10 films for the weekend of April 12-14, 2024. All totals listed are domestic:
