Cloud Atlas obtains Hugh Grant

The film adaptation of Cloud Atlas, which is set to start filming this week, has just received another acting talent, Hugh Grant. Hugh is just one in a long list of well-known actors joining this film, including Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess, Ben Whishaw, Keith David, David Gyas and Susan Sarandon. The Wachowski brothers are directing along with Run Lola Run helmer, Tom Tykwer. The film is also said to feature temporal cross-dressing ala Back to the Future Part II… Let’s just hope Lana Wachowski doesn’t affect the film too much in this regard.

Personally, I loved the concept of Cloud Atlas, but when I sat down to read the actual book, I got a little bored with it. It could just be that I don’t have the patience necessary to sit through tons of back story and continuous historic details… However, I’ve always been more of a film buff (surprise there, huh?). That being said, I can’t wait to see another historic epic the likes of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. I am fascinated by the aspect of time displacement, since the structure of Cloud Atlas is essentially the viewing of five separate time periods spread across two centuries. This one’s definitely at the top of my “Most Anticipated” list.

Cloud Atlas will release late 2012.
