Remember that sequel to the 1988 Eddie Murphey classic Coming To America? You know, the one titled Coming 2 America? Painfully unfunny pun aside, Amazon has announced that it has acquired the distribution rights to this hotly anticipated sequel and will be debuting it on Amazon Prime starting March 5, 2021. It will be available worldwide in over 240, the company stated.

Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, said in a press release, “Coming to America was a cultural phenomenon that is one of the most loved and celebrated comedies of all time. Thanks to Eddie Murphy’s comedic genius along with the brilliant filmmakers, writers, and fabulous cast, we couldn’t be more excited to celebrate this new adventure. We know audiences around the world will fall in love with this hilarious, joyful movie that will surely become a timeless favorite.”

Directed by Craig Brewer, Coming 2 America is a direct sequel to the original classic. I’m not sure how the 33-year-gap will be explained, but Murphey’s character of Prince Akeem Joffer discovers he has a son in America that may be the rightful heir to the Kingdom of Zamunda. I can’t imagine anyone has been waiting for multiple generations to see this story unfold, but that’s neither here nor there.
