Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon sequel in the works

For years there has been speculation about a sequel or prequel to Ang Lee’s 2000 film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The movie was an adaptation of one novel in Wang Du Lu’s Crane-Iron Pentalogy, which meant there was ample material to bring to the big screen. A sequel is finally going to happen thanks to The Weinstein Company, which is aiming at a May 2013 start date.

Based on Silver Vase, Iron Knight, the fourth book in the series (aka Electric Tiger, Hidden Boogaloo), the film will center on Yu Shu Lien, the character played by Michelle Yeoh. The sequel’s screenplay is by John Fusco (Hidalgo) and Ronny Yu is currently in talks to direct. While no casting will be announced until a director is in place, and it’s been suggested that Yuen Woo-ping may return as fight choreographer and that some actors in the previous movie could reprise their roles.

I’d be interested if Yu is the director, but more out of curiosity than anything else. I still have fond memories of The Bride with White Hair, and Freddy vs. Jason wasn’t too shabby either for what it was. Thing is, Yu’s such a different director from Lee, so I don’t expect the film to be anywhere near the same in terms of epic sweep or melancholy tone. Maybe someone like Peter Chan (Dragon) or Andrew Lau (Infernal Affairs, The Guillotines) would make more sense for the project, but we’ll see what happens.
