David Cronenberg to direct Robert Pattinson. For real.

You read that right.

David Cronenberg has just cast Robert “Edward” Pattinson in his new film Cosmopolis.  The Twilight star will play Eric Packer, a financial genius at the heart of an assassination plot thanks to his capitalistic powers. He will probably smolder some and, for all the Twilight girls, maybe have a really graphic sex scene on a stairwell.

This is major, as it’s Pattinson’s first role after the Twilight series comes to a close in 2012 with part 2 of Breaking Dawn. It’s also quite clearly an earnest attempt for Pattinson to be seen as a serious actor, because you really can’t do a lot better than David Cronenberg, unless you decide to exhume and reanimate Akira Kurosawa. Good on him, I say. I always got the impression from all the Twilight press that he’s a relatively cool guy that is completely uncomfortable being possibly the biggest male sex symbol in the world. I remember reading about his casting as Edward early on, and he just seemed excited that the studio was going to let his band record a song for the movie.
