DC announces dates for Suicide Squad 2 and the Super Pets (!?) movie

I can’t remember the last time DC has been this busy with all of the news that dropped this week about their upcoming projects. Not only did we get the teaser trailer for Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), which I affectionately call BopatFEoOHQ, a potential Batman Beyond movie, and the announcement of Ben Affleck leaving The Batman while also giving it a 2021 release date all in the span of a few days. But the news train keeps on rolling, since DC announced even more projects that they plan on releasing in theaters in 2021.

Joining The Batman and its summer 2021 release window will be Suicide Squad 2, releasing on May 21st, 2021 with DC also announcing that they’ll be making a Super Pets movie that will release on August 6th, 2021. For those keeping track, DC is releasing three movies back to back in the span of 13 weeks and is going to bring out Batman as a heavy hitter on June 25th, 2021 so they can completely dominate the summer.

There’s a lot of news to take in, so let’s start off with Suicide Squad 2, which I am contractually obligated to say is the sequel to the Academy Award winning movie Suicide Squad. You may recall that a few months ago it was announced that James Gunn, after being fired from Disney, jumped ship to DC and was in talks to direct Suicide Squad 2. While it’s still not known if he’s directing the movie, which is weird why they haven’t announced anything about it yet, it’s more or less confirmed that he is at the very least going to be writing it with most of the original cast returning for the sequel. Whether we get everyone’s favorite character, Slipknot, is yet to be seen.

As for Super Pets, did anyone see this announcement coming? I feel like there would have been some rumors flying around that DC was going to make a movie about super-powered dogs, cats, and birds, but this came right out of nowhere. Unfortunately, we don’t know if it’s going to be animated or if it’s live-action, which is going to be a key factor when this movie gets released. I’d much rather see cartoon dogs save the world from Darkseid than see realpets fight crime with terrible CGI or voice-overs like in A Dog’s Way Home. I will also riot if Detective Chimp is not featured in this movie in some way, shape, or form. America needs to see a hyper-intelligent monkey whose intelligence rivals Batman solve crimes with the aid of Krypto the Super-dog and Batcow.

I would be concerned about DC trying to put too much on its plate, but with the general assumption that they’ve killed their shared universe approach to franchise building, I’m interested in seeing where this goes. Even if one of the movies is a complete bomb, at least there’ll be two more movies coming out that summer that will hopefully cleanse your palette. I mean, it’s not like DC can make three terrible movies in a row that will drain me of my will to live, right? Right…?
