Del Toro’s Pacific Rim casts Rinko Kikuchi

A number of Flixist staff members will be descending on Comic-con and it’s no secret that we’re paying special attention to Guillermo del Toro. The Hellboy manchild will be on a panel alongside his cast for the upcoming Pacific Rim, which sounds like the best thing ever, or possibly the worst.

“When an alien attack threatens the Earth’s existence, giant robots piloted by humans are deployed to fight off the menace.”

It appears to be unintentional, but the description for that panel includes Rinko Kikuchi, presumably filling the roll of a Japanese pilot even though it hadn’t even been rumored as far as I know. She and the film’s star, played by Sons of Anarchy‘s Charlie Hunnam will both play robot jockeys who lose their co-pilots and throw in together. Wild guess, she’ll devote a certain amount of dialogue to mocking American mech designs and insisting that he’s her co-pilot and not the other way around, but I haven’t read the script.

A solid deal, I think. While I’m mostly unimpressed with Best Picture nominee Babel, Rinko Kikuchi came through in the strongest scenes of that film. The breakout role was powerfully heartbreaking and I expected her to be far more in demand than she has been since.
