Devaluation of the Oscars continues with honorary awards

The Academy Awards suck. Want proof? BAM! If that’s not good enough for you, then maybe this news will convince you. Three honorary Oscars are being presented to actor James Earl Jones, make-up artist Dick Smith, and… Oprah Winfrey. Jones, best known for not actually being Darth Vader, has apparently been snubbed various times throughout his career, and the Academy has decided that it’s time to show that they acknowledge their incompetence and are trying to make amends. Smith has worked on a lot of famous films (including The Godfather and Taxi Driver) and actually won the Oscar for Best Makeup in 1984 for Amadeus… so I’m not really sure what this is supposed to signify. Then we come to Oprah. Apparently she was nominated for an Academy Award way back when for her role in the 1985 film adaptation of The Color Purple but is actually recieving the award for her services to humanity. That’s all well and good, but when the hell did an Oscar become the equivalent of a Nobel Peace Prize?

None of these awards make any sense, and all of them demonstrate some kind of failure or just lack of sense on the part of the Academy. Why do we pay attention to these things again? Glitz and glam is all well and good… but they don’t even seem like they’re trying to keep these things relevant anymore. It’s pathetic.
