Diablo Cody has music all up in her Sweet Valley High

After watching Juno for the first time, I found the music somewhat sweet and charming. Unfortunately, so did everyone else, and then every single note became absolutely grating. Luckily for those who have the power to withstand such things, Diablo Cody has revealed that her new project Sweet Valley High will be a musical. Not only that, but it will be pushing a hard R. The movie is based on a young adult novel series by the same name that seems to be about teenagers being generic teenagers. She’s hoping that the movie will turn out to be something of an American Graffiti for the later time period.

I’m not a fan of Cody’s writing, but what really makes a musical is the actual music. Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt of Broadway’s Next to Normal will be working on the songs. I haven’t seen Next to Normal, so I’m not sure if that’s a good thing. How’s that music? Is this going to be awful, or does it have a good chance?
