Disney casts its next princess, Moana

I’ve been pretty excited for Disney’s Moana since it was announced. After hearing their next project was about a Polynesian princess, and after Frozen, Big Hero 6, Wreck-It Ralph and Tangled turned out pretty good, they’ve earned both my attention and anticipation. So far everything sounds right, too. Dwayne Johnson joined the cast as a Polynesian demigod, the story of the film is about the young Moana wanting to prove she’s got the right stuff to be an explorer, and the best thing just got announced today.

Coupled with a super cute video, Disney announced that 14 year old Auli’i Cravalho, a native Hawaiian is voicing the titular role. This is huge for a whole bevy of reasons, but there’s no point in spelling them out when you see how adorable this girl is. Of course she’d get the part!

Moana releases November 23rd, 2016. Here’s a synopsis:

In the ancient South Pacific world of Oceania, Moana, a born navigator, sets sail in search of a fabled island. During her incredible journey, she teams up with her hero, the legendary demi-god Maui, to traverse the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous sea creatures, breathtaking underworlds and ancient folklore.
