Disney to lay off on Star Wars films after Episode IX

Disney is set to take a break from producing Star Wars films after the release of Episode IX. According to recent comments from Bob Iger made to Bloomberg, Disney isn’t concerned about overexposure for the brand, but, “will take a pause, some time, and reset,” following the release of the still unnamed ninth entry.

“We have not announced any specific plans for movies thereafter,” Iger said to Bloomberg. “There are movies in development, but we have not announced them…There will be other Stars Wars movies, but there will be a bit of a hiatus.” Iger is likely referring to the Rian Johnson trilogy of films, which are still shrouded in mystery.

Seeing as how Disney+ is going to be loaded with Star Wars content, pulling back from films doesn’t bother me in the slightest. I started to feel Star Wars fatigue when Rogue One released, but the relative flop of Solo appears to have shifted Disney’s plans. Not only is it the worst performing entry in the franchise, but it also had a knock-on effect of stilting toy sales. Since Star Wars has always been about merchandise (whether you want to believe that or not), Disney clearly wants to keep the brand fresh instead of running it into the ground.
