Disney Warns that Star Wars Episode IX may cause epileptic seizures

Walt Disney Studios has announced that Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker will feature several sequences with sustained flashing lights. These flashes may affect those with photosensitive epilepsy and could potentially induce a seizure.

The company has partnered with The Epilepsy Foundation to spread the warning to those who may be impacted. The Foundation has three recommendations if you think these flashing scenes might affect you:

  • Ask a friend to watch the movie first.
  • Take your friend with you when you go see the film to alert you to which scenes contain the flashing lights so you block your eyes during those scenes.
  • Teach your friend the three simple steps of seizure first aid — Stay, Safe, Side — so that they can assist if you have a seizure.

Approximately 3% of persons with epilepsy experience photosensitivity. It is more common in youth than in adults. If you are concerned about yourself or a loved one and would like to learn more, click here to go to the Epilepsy Foundation’s learning resource.
